The ATO is targeting unusually high work-related expense claims across all industries and occupations this year. Due to improvements in technology, the ATO is able to scrutinise every return and identify claims that are significantly higher than expected. This means the ATO will compare your claim against other claims that are lodged by people with similar occupations and employment income.
In addition to targeting high work-related expense claims, the ATO will also focus on the following:
- Expenses that have already been reimbursed by employers, and
- Private expenses such as travel from home to work
